Pierce the Veil Selfish Machines free essay sample
After much touring and recording, post-hardcore band Pierce the Veil returns with their long-awaited sophomore release, ââ¬Å"Selfish Machines.â⬠A lot has happened since the groups debut, ââ¬Å"A Flair for the Dramatic,â⬠but all for the better; they grew both as people and musicians. Composed of contagiously catchy sounds, old and new, and well-written lyrics, the album is a blessing in disguise. Lead vocalist Vic Fuentes voice is something youll either love or hate. I, for one, absolutely adore his piercing high octaves. You can hear him pouring his heart out; his screams are especially memorable in the chorus of ââ¬Å"The New National Anthem.â⬠The vocals blend perfectly with the albums fast, upbeat tracks as well as its slow, somber ones. Drummer Mike Fuentes and guitarists Tony Perry and Jaime Preciado make a great combination thats satisfying to the ear and creates Pierce the Veils distinctive sound. Bonus track ââ¬Å"She Makes Dirty Words Sound Prettyâ⬠may sound intriguing to some. In addition, lines like ââ¬Å"Can we create something beautiful and destroy it?â⬠(from ââ¬Å"Disasterologyâ⬠) and ââ¬Å"My love for you was bulletproof but youre the one who shot meâ⬠(from ââ¬Å"Bulletproof Loveâ⬠) are sure to find a way into your head. The meaning behind the words will move you deeply. What makes ââ¬Å"Selfish Machinesâ⬠such a successful album is its versatility. ââ¬Å"Stay Away From My Friendsâ⬠is emotionally dynamic, while ââ¬Å"Carapherneliaâ⬠is loud and rough, and Jeremy McKinnon (from A Day to Remember) shrieks ââ¬Å"What if I cant forget you?â⬠in a way that will give you goose bumps. The slow-paced song ââ¬Å"Southern Constellationsâ⬠leads you into the next wild track, ââ¬Å"The Boy Who Flew.â⬠Some pieces, like ââ¬Å"Besitosâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I Dont Care If Youre Contagiousâ⬠boast addictive choruses that will have you involuntarily singing along. The last track, ââ¬Å"The Sky Under the Sea,â⬠is undeniably one of the best, making up for the preceding weak one. Highlighting all the bands strong points ââ¬â fast drum patterns, captivating guitar chords, and Vics mesmerizing cry ââ¬â it has a little bit of everything. Overall, ââ¬Å"Selfish Machinesâ⬠is an astounding album that lives up to its accolade as one of Alternative Press Magazines ââ¬Å"Most Anticipated of 2010,â⬠and is bound to draws many listeners who are looking for something new.
